Olfactory Reference Syndrome (ORS) is a psychological disorder in which an
individual becomes excessively concerned about his or her odor. For
example, an individual with ORS may worry that he/she has bad breath, when
in reality this smell is completely normal. In ORS, preoccupation with
one's body odor becomes time consuming and causes significant distress. In
addition, a person with this disorder can become so worried about his/her
odor that he or she is constantly checking, trying to mask, or talking
about the imagined smell. He/she may even seek out the help of a
physician, dentist, or gynecologist. As a result, ORS can seriously
interfere with a person's life. Someone with this disorder may also have
difficulty concentrating due to the odor related thoughts or have
interpersonal problems.
